Week 5 Flashcards
A statistical technique where we are interested in commonalities and underlying factors between different sets of variables
- analyze data to find overarching commonalities or themes
Factor Analysis
What is factor analysis used in?
Used within intelligence and personality testing
What is factor analysis used for?
- A way to demonstrate construct validity
• If factors are theoretically related, we should see a significant correlation between constructs. - test construction
- How each individuals items on a test loads against one or more “factors”
What are the two types of factor analysis?
Exploratory factor analysis (EFA)
confirmatory factor analysis (CFA)
Who invented factor analysis?
Invented by Pearson in 1901
Further developed by Spearman in 1904
Summarises large amount of items or information into fewer scores, based on:
- Correlations among items
- Common variance among items
A. Factor analysis
B. Exploratory factor analysis
C. Confirmatory factor analysis
b. Exploratory factor analysis
What does exploratory factor analysis do with data?
EFA identifies underlying clusters/dimensions as a way to summarise data
- correlations among items
- Common variance among items
- that are not captured by these clusters
- items that are complex- fall equally into two or more different clusters
What is Interactionalism
A. Used in Exploratory Factor analysis
B. Nature and nurture work together to influence intelligence
C. Intelligence is the ability to acquire and apply knowledge
D. The ability to reason logically, plan effectively, and infer perceptively influences intelligence
B. Nature and nurture work together to influence intelligence
