WEEK 4 TERMS Flashcards
Fugato
a piece of music that resembles fugue in some ways but lacks certain necessary characteristics of a true fugue; or a loosely fugal passage within a predominantly non-fugal movement
libretto
a printed or manuscript book giving the literary text, both sung and spoken, of an opera (or other musical work)
recitativo secco
a 19th-century term for recitative accompanied (normally) by a keyboard instrument instead of by the orchestra
Aria
typically a closed lyrical piece for solo voice with or without instrumental accompaniment, either independent or forming part of an opera, oratorio, cantata, or other large work (common-practice operas usually have arias preceded by recitatives)
theme
an identifiable motif or idea; musical material on which part or all of a work is based, usually having a recognizable melody.
