Week 4 - Elimination Flashcards
What is likely during kidney dysfunction because aldosterone is not secreted correctly
hypertension
What can decreased drug clearance due to kidney dysfunction lead to
drug to drug interactions
What measurement of urine output per hour is concerning
anything 30 mL or less
What is 24 hour urine lab used for
detects and evaluates progression of kidney disease
What does creatinine measure
the effectiveness of renal function
What does BUN measure
amount of urea being produced as an indicator of renal function
What will patients on dialysis most likely not produce
urine
When is hemodialysis used
for acutely ill patients until kidneys resume function or long-term replacement therapy in chronic/end stage kidney disease
What medication should be given after dialysis and why
heart medication, so it is not pulled off
What do we worry most about in a UTI
sepsis
Urethrovesical reflux
urine is forced into the urethra from the bladder with cough and straining –> bladder pressure increases
When bladder pressure decreases –> urine flows back into the bladder introducing new bacteria to the bladder
Ureterovesical reflux
urine moves up to the ureters during voiding due to a failure of the ureterovesical valve –> preventing full emptying of the bladder –> urinary stasis and contamination of the ureters
Stress urinary incontinence
the involuntary loss of urine through an intact urethra as a result of sneezing, coughing, and changing position
Urge urinary incontinence
the involuntary loss of urine associated with a strong urge to void that cannot be suppressed
Functional urinary incontinence
the lower urinary tract function is intact but other factors (ex. cognitive impairment) make it difficult for the patient to void
