Hemolytic uremic syndrome
a severe complications that can cause chronic kidney disease, kidney failure, death
Symptoms of hemolytic uremic syndrome
urinating less, feeling tired, losing pink color in cheeks and inside the lower eyelids
Why are children and adolescents at a greater risk
immune systems are still developing and less stomach acid is being produced

children under 5 with E. coli infections

swollen glands, fever, muscle pain, headache, stiff neck

Clear liquid diet
liquids are see through, used to maintain fluid balance, often in post-op patients in cases of acute vomiting and diarrhea
Full liquid diet
nutrition without chewing, used in patients with GI upset and progression after surgery
Thickened liquids
use in patients with difficulty swallowing, liquid should be smooth with no lumps
Mechanical soft diet
used in patients when need easy to chew food
High protein diet
used in patients with low mass, elderly, burn, wounds, infections, hypothyroidism to reestablish anabolism and raise albumin
Low protein diet
used in patients with kidney damage
Low sodium diet
used in patients with heart failure, hypertension, cirrhosis to lower body water levels and promote excretion
Low residue diet
used in patients that have temporary GI/elimination problems to minimize intestinal activity
