Q

Heart and Lungs (elemental relationship?)

A

Fire and Metal
Heart governs blood, lungs govern qi (yin and yang work together)

Heart governs Blood and Lungs govern Qi:
Qi is the commander of Blood, and Blood is the mother Qi (Qi attaches to Blood):

> Zong/Pectoral Qi: both Lungs and Heart (both in chest and need pectoral qi that can change to blood)

> The Blood formation in Heart (Reddening) needs Lungs inhaling the Clear Qi to mix with Food-Qi

FIX CARD Tony added this *****

Heart (Fire) can melt Lungs (Metal)
Oxygen comes into the lungs, circulates in the blood
Heart pumps blood,

In clinic: pulmonary-cardio vascular disease (lung qi too weak, fire can overact on the lung), chronic lung conditions COPD / asthma / bronchitis… people may lack blood. Heart is stressed, working too hard. Heart gets weak.

Q

Clinical Manifestations of Heart / Lung Dysfunction

** Tony added not all on slide

A

(Pulmonarycardio disease) *
Lung Qi def. > weak Blood circulation: Oppression in chest, purplish tongue and complexion;
Blood stagnation in the Heart > cough, Shortness of breath

If Lung qi is too strong, excess > phlegm… body fluid stays in the lung in which case metal is too much. It overacts on Heart and phlegm can mist the heart, overact, and insult the heart. Patients mental activities are not good.

Q

Heart and Liver relationship in emotional disorders?

A

Heart houses Mind and Liver maintains the free flow of qi relating to emotions.

If you are stressed, Liver qi tends to stagnate, leading to emotional disturbances.

Q

Heart and Liver in Blood deficiency?

A

When blood level is lower, affects both the Heart and Liver.

Liver stores blood. Heart makes blood.

Clinically: Blood def of both LR & Heart;
Fire in LR (Liver Yang is too much) and it can pass to child organ HT. Excess pattern. Too much Liver Yang/ Heat (qi stagnation in the Liver) it can transform to heat and disturb the Heart. Mother / Child.

Q

How do the Heart and the Spleen work together in circulation?

A

The Heart pumps the blood to circulate it, and the Spleen qi holds the blood in the vessels. (They work together.)

Q

How do the Heart and Spleen work together to create blood?

A

Spleen sends food qi up to the lungs and heart, then the heart reddens the qi and creates blood.

Q

SP and LU in distribution of Body fluids?

A

Distribution of Body Fluids:
Clinically: SP Qi def. > LU Qi def. (Mother-child both deficient)

When LU Qi is low, you also have to tonify the Spleen.

SP fails to transport > dampness and phlegm:
affects LU to descending and dispersing:
results in cough and asthma

Q

Movement of qi in Lung and Wood relationship

A

Sometimes the WOOD is insulting the METAL.
(Lung qi descends on the left. Liver qi moves up on the right. Without both moving well they affect one another.)
for lung qi to move correctly you must promote the liver qi.

Lung Qi descends and Liver Qi ascends: regulate the Qi movements (left and right)
