Passive System (Prevention System)
focuses on prohibiting and containing the fire, once these elements are in place nothing else has to occur for them to be part of the control of a fire
Active System
A system that must be activated in order to work against the fire
Exiting System
The elements of a space or building that assist and direct occupants to a place of safety
Fuel Load
Components of a building that feed and sustain a fire
Compartmentation
The separation of areas in a building to control fire and smoke using walls, floor, and ceiling assembly
Fire Wall
A wall assembly that provides complete vertical separation between areas in a building extending continuously from the foundation to or through
the roof
Party Wall
A fire wall that is located on a lot line and shared between two buildings
Fire Barrier
A wall that has a fire-resistance rating, that extends from slab to slab
Fire Partition
A less restrictive fire barrier that is allowed to stop at a rated ceiling assembly
Horizontal Assembly
A floor/ceiling r ceiling/roof assembly that is required to be rated
Demising Wall
A wall shared by two different tenants
Smoke Barrier
Restricts the movement or passage of smoke and fire gases, often rated
Smoke Partition
Limits the movement or passage of smoke and fire gases, not requiring fire rating
