Week 4 Flashcards
Dyslexia
Impairment of the ability to read and spell
Dyscalculia
Unusual difficulty with math, probably originating from a distinct part of the brain
Dysgraphia
Learning disability that causes extreme difficulty in writing legibly
Auditory Processing Disorder
Affects the processing of speech sounds in the auditory center in the brain
Neurodiversity
The diversity of human minds, the infinite variation in neurocognitive functioning within our species
Neurodivergent
Having a mind that functions in ways which diverge significantly from the dominant societal standards of “normal.”
Neurotypical (NT)
Having a style of neurocognitive functioning that falls within the dominant societal standards of “normal.”
Neurominority
A population of neurodivergent people that share one of multiple similar forms of neurodivergence.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
A condition beginning in early childhood in which a person shows persistent communication deficits as well as restricted and repetitive patterns of behaviors, interests, or activities.
Tourette Syndrome
A complex neurological disorder characterized by involuntary tics, grunts, and compulsive utterances that sometimes include obscenities
Sensory Processing
Ability of the central nervous system to interpret and regulate responses to sensory input
Praxis
Ability to create ideas about how to act and interact with the environment; carry out the action plans; and correct one’s actions so that the motor execution matches the desired outcome.
Joint Attention
A process in which social partners intentionally focus on a common object or event in the external environment
Echolalia
Automatic and immediate repetition of what others say
Sensory Modulation Dysfunction
Difficulty filtering and adjusting to sensory events
Global Developmental Delay
Individuals under the age of 5 years; failure to meet expected developmental milestones in several areas of intellectual functioning.
Intellectual Disability
A condition of limited mental ability, indicated by an intelligence score of 70 or below and difficulty in adapting to the demands of life; varies from mild to profound
Developmental Delay
A noticeable lag in a particular aspect of development
Language Processing Disorder
A specific type of Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) in which there is difficulty attaching meaning to sound groups that form words, sentences and stories; LPD relates only to the processing of expressive and/or receptive language.
Non-Verbal Learning Disability
May misunderstand non-verbal communications or understand the communications but be unable to formulate an appropriate response. Knowing when and how to use physical contact and recognizing emotions in others and expressing them for oneself can be problematic.
What are the types of tics someone with tourette’s may show?
A. Motor and Vocal Tics
B. Simple and Complex Tics
C. Vocal and Complex Tics
D. Both A and B
D. Both A and B
A simple tic is described to include __.
Simple tics includes just a few body parts
Ex: Squinting eyes or sniffing
A complex tic is described to involve __.
Complex tics involve several different body parts and can have a pattern.
Ex: Bobbing head while jerking arm, then jumping
A motor tic involves __.
Motor tics are movements of the body, blinking, jerking of the arm, shrugging shoulders
