Assisting a client with feeding
Raise bed to appropriate level
Put client in high-Fowler position
Provide hand washing for you and client

What to remember when assisting clients to eat
Encourage clients to help with as much as possible to promote independence and dignity
What to watch for when assisting a client to eat
Gurgling, pocketing, swallowing multiple times, sputtering and coughing
When making occupied bed
Roll client to side
Roll sheets to centre
Change gloves
Put on new sheets
Roll client over
Remove sheets
Change gloves
Pull over clean sheets
Roll client onto back
Change top sheet
Perform hand hygiene
What should you document after eating
How much was eaten, if the client experienced any difficulties swallowing, or nausea
Set up for eating
Ensure the client has the correct type of diet
If request privacy, provide privacy
How to feed someone who can’t feed themselves
1/3 spoon fulls
Ask what order they would prefer
Give time
Place food on strong side of the mouth
If client is showing signs of dysphagia
Stop and report
