Week 3 Space management Flashcards
Space management is for…
Use with adequate space and irregularity
Ideal for managing the leeway space (up to 9mm)
If a tooth is removed during this process and the space is not controlled, the space will reduce and it will lead to not enough adequate space.
Potentially can manage up to _____ of crowded patients with resulting _______ crowing. Must manage until _____
75%
≤ 1mm
Transition complete
Prognosis is good unless…..
we extract or expand arches
If no treatment when space adequate with irregularity…
you just allow the normal transition from primary to permanent dentition to take place. if it happens unsupervised, the molars will shift forward, and they’ll end up with permanent irregularity and crowding with the molars shifted forward. sometimes with class I and sometimes with end-to-end.
What is Disking?
Another way to take care of some transitional crowding, use with minor irregularity
Make true vertical reductions (MD size)
Consider F- Varnish
With 1-2 mm of crowding during the transition, it may not even be worth doing in many cases.
Possible sites for Disking?
MD surfaces of Primary canines and molars
True or False?
You can disk permanent teeth in the mixed dentition.
FALSE!
Do not disk permanent teeth in the mixed dentition
Function of Holding arches
FL discrepancies resolve best
Controls arch form and coordination
Can be used as a retainer
Can control arch length and move teeth - tipping only! (no rotation)
Used when 1mm or less of crowding
Disking and holding arches
you can do disking and holding arches at the same time. it’s a bit of a redundant approach, but probably necessary when there’s a little more crowding to take care of
but some arch forms can be difficult to deal with
True or False?
Selective extraction with holding arches necessary when there i greater irregularity but adequate space
True
