WEEK 3 - QUALITATIVE RESEARCH DESIGN Flashcards
WHAT ARE THE STEPS IN THE QUALITATIVE RESEARCH DESIGN?
- DEFINING THE RESEARCH QUESTION/PROBLEM
- STUDY DESIGN
- DATA COLLECTION
- DATA MANAGEMENT
- DATA ANALYSIS/DATA INTERPRETATION
- WRITING UP
WHAT HAPPENS IN THE 1ST STAGE OF THE QUALITATIVE RESEARCH DESIGN - DEFINING RHE RESEARCH PROBLEM?
- Literature review, research question, hypothesis
- Research question should identify the phenomenon you are studying your chosen population, and what you want to find out about them.
WHAT IS THE 1ST STAGE OF THE QUALITATIVE RESEARCH DESIGN?
DEFINING THE RESEARCH QUESTION
WHAT SHOULD THE RESEARCH QUESTION IDENTIFY?
• Research question should identify the phenomenon you are studying your chosen population, and what you want to find out about them.
WHAT IS ASKED IN QUALITATIVE RESEARCH?
In qualitative research we ask what/why/how something happens rather than testing an inferred relationship (hypothesis testing).
WHAT SHOULDN’T BE ASKED/USED WHEN WRITING A QUALITATIVE RESEARCH QUESTION?
- What is the relationship between…
- What factors predict…
- What is the effectiveness of…
- Is there a correlation between…
- How many…
IN WHAT WAYS CAN LITERATURE REVIEWS BE USED?
DEDUCTIVELY
INDUCTIVELY
HOW CAN LITERATURE REVIEWS BE USED INDUCTIVELY?
being with collection and analysis of data. Process leads to questions then addressed in literature
HOW CAN LITERATURE REVIEWS BE USED DEDUCTIVELY?
provide source of focus and examine research at the outset of the study (aims, objective, hypothesis)
DOES QUALITATIVE RESEARCH USE AN INDUCTIVE OR DEDUCTIVE APPROACH?
INDUCTIVE
WHAT ARE THE ROLES OF LITERATURE REVIEW ARGUMENTS?
- Reviewing literature curtails the inductive analysis and thus should be avoided at the outset.
- Review of literature is important early in qualitative research and serves various functions.
WHAT ARE THE FUNCTIONS OF LITERATURE REVIEWS EARLY ON IN QUALITATIVE RESEARCH?
- Demonstrates underlying assumptions behind research questions central to the research proposal.
- Provides a way for the novice researcher to identify gaps that exist in the body of literature and provide a rationale for how the proposed study may contribute to knowledge.
- To position your research topic and problem by giving an overview of what we know and do not know.
- To evaluate strengths and weaknesses in previous research in a field, topic or problem that may justify your approach and problem.
- To select concepts, theories, assumptions and perspectives in your study by contrasting relevant research.
When is a literature review completed in qualitative research?
- Tend not to complete a literature review at beginning and then put to one side.
- They revisit the literature right up until the writing up stage.
- Wait until topic has emerged over time to delve deeply into literature.
WHAT DO QUALITATIVE RESEARCHERS USE WHEN DOING A LITERATURE REVIEW?
- Government policy documents
- Peer reviewed academic journals
- Widely cited academic monographs
WHAT DO RESEARCHERS HAVE TO MALE CRITICAL JUDGEMENTS ABOUT WHEN DOING A LITERATURE REVIEW?
AUTHORITY
ACCURACY
BIAS AND OBJECTIVITY
WHAT WILL PEER REVIEWED ARTICLES SHOW?
THE TITLE OF THE JOURNAL
ARTICLE INFO SECTION (DETAILS OF REVIEW PROCESS)
WHAT ARE THE 3 SAMPLING TECHNIQUES IN RESEARCH?
CONVENIENCE SAMPLING
PURPOSIVE SAMPLING
SNOWBALL SAMPLING
CONVENIENCE SAMPLING
• Convenience sampling; involves sample behind drawn from that part of the population which is close to hand.
PURPOSIVE SAMPLING
• Purposive sampling; sample is built up which enables the researcher to meet the needs of the project.
SNOWBALL SAMPLING
• Snowball sampling; existing ppts recruit further ppts from among their acquaintances.

WHAT TYPE OF SAMPLING IS IT WHEN…
…existing ppts recruit further ppts from among their acquaintances?
SNOWBALL SAMPLING
WHAT DOES PURPOSIVE SAMPLING IN QUALITATIVE RESEARCH INVOLVE AND FOCUS ON?
- Identification and selection of (groups of) individuals that are well informed in the phenomenon of interest.
- Recruiting individuals that hold particular characteristics that meet the requirements for the study.
- Often focuses on ‘data saturation’; continue to recruit until nothing new is being identified in the data.
