Week 3: Procrastination Flashcards
Learning: What is procrastination?
When you have to do an unpleasant task. Your brains makes you feel bad. So you turn to fun stuff like surfing the web and you instantly feel better. But this only lasts for a short while. Because the next time you need to do that unpleasant task, you will feel even worse (time has passed and you probably have more work).
Learning: How to fight procrastination?
Habit. You don’t have to think in a focussed manner, so it doesn’t require much energy.
Learning: What are the 4 parts of a habit?
1) The cue (what sets it off)
2) The routine (what you do in response to the queue)
3) The reward (You feel good after it)
4) The belief (you have to change your belief sometimes in order to form a habit)
Learning: what causes the pain that drives you to procrastination?
Focussing on product (the end result). You should focus on the process. e.g. do not start to finish your home-work, instead start on 20 minutes of work on homework. This also forms a habit, so it will require less willpower to do so.
Learning: How to create a habit?
Set a plan, make a routine. See what works. If it works, believe that it works, so you later don’t fall back to bad routines when the going gets tough. Reward yourself, when you start craving the reward, then the routine becomes a habit.
Learning: How do you use less willpower to fight procrastination?
Find the cues that trigger procrastination. And try to nullify them. You only have to change this cue to stop procrastinating.
Learning: When are difficult subjects best learned?
In the morning
Learning: How can you better retain information?
The biggest part is (spaced out) repetition. You can also attach information from other senses to the subject, this will help you recall it more easily. e.g. visual cues, auditory, smell,…
Learning: Why is a planning important?
If you make a planning the day before, it won’t pop up in your memory anymore because it’s “handled”. Your subconscious then also starts to process the list, so you will execute more efficiently.
Learning: What is the benefit of putting certain formulas, points to memory?
It will seem more real to you and you will master the other material better, then if you just look up the points or formulas.
