Week 3 part 3 Flashcards
Pellagra, biomedical model
What is disease
diagnosable pathologies
4 D’s of Pellagra
Dementia, Dermatitis, Diarrhea, Death
What caused Pellagra?
diet caused diseases through mass processed corn and lack of vitamin B3
What did Europeans think caused this?
associated with poverty
theory spoiled corn releases toxins
What did US think cause this?
caused by germs because at the time germ theory was the major paradigm
-blamed the immigrants
How were patients treated?
stigmatized, hospitals just for pellagra people
Why did the pellagra epidemic occur?
mistreatment of minorities
manipulation of power, it was not affecting elite people
avoiding exploring new ideas
biases
What did Dr. Joseph Goldberger do?
Joseph goldberger was assigned to study thhe disease.
he found that it was not infectious, it was diet caused. However, no one believed him.
Where was pellagra most evident in?
orphanages, hospitals, prison
What was the PPF (pellagra preventative factor)
vitamin B3 niacin
What is the biomedical approach? what are the factors?
dominant paradigm today
1. mind body dualism
2. physical reductionism
3. specific etiology
4. machine metaphor
5. regimin control
What are the ways of categorizing disease?
- infectious diseases
- chronic disease
- accident/injuries
What are some infectious diseases
Sexually transmitted diseases AIDS, HIV
zoonotic
vector borne
Examples of chronic disease
major cause of death
cancer
increasing with age population
1. cardiovascular disease
2. diabetes
3. cancer
4. respiratory infections
What does reductionism do?
Reduces complex health phenomena to simpler biological explanations.
It emphasizes understanding health and illness through the study of specific biological mechanisms, such as genetic factors, cellular processes, and biochemical pathways
