representation EU
Citizens are represented by the EP (chosen via direct popular elections)
- MS are represented in the European Council (Heads of States and government
of MS) and Council of Ministers (representatives at ministerial level)
- Interests of EU as a whole are protected by the Commission, Court and ECB
intergovernmental institutions
EU institutions that represent the MS: European Council.
supranational institutions
all those EU institutions that represent the general interest of the EU (Commission, Court etc).
Executives in EU
giving political direction, implementing policies and externally representing the EU.
1.European Council: provides political direction and represents EU externally in its relations with other countries/ organizations.
2. The Council’s executive role consists of implementation of policies.
3. The Commission fulfils all 3 executive roles: initiates legislation, implements
policies and represents EU externally.
4. ECB has an executive role as it implements monetary policy in the MS that
have the Euro as their currency.
legislative EU
examining, modifying and adopting legislation measures which provide the basis for EU policies. Parliament and the Council share legislative powers (→ bicameral legislature: two houses or chambers, in federal systems one house represents the national population, whilst the other house represents regional populations by province, state or canton.
