Week 3: Formulation and its Application in Mental Health Flashcards
What is the key principle of the psychodynamic model?
Behaviour is motivated by unconscious drives/instincts
What is repression?
Unacceptable drives, thoughts, memories etc. are pushed out of the awareness
What is projection?
Unacceptable impulses are attributed to the other person
What is reaction formation?
The unacceptable impulse is expressed as its opposite
What is introjection?
The unacceptable impulse is directed towards oneself rather than the other person
What is sublimation?
The impulse is channelled into productive activity
What is the key principle of the behavioural model?
Mental health problems are learned
What is classical conditioning?
An unconditioned stimulus is paired with a conditioned stimulus to produce a conditioned response
What is operant conditioning?
Behaviour is produced by reinforcement
When does behaviour increase, according to the behavioural model?
Through positive and negative reinforcement
When does behaviour decrease, according to the behavioural model?
Through punishment and extinction
What is positive reinforcement?
Behaviour is encouraged by introducing a desired stimulus
What is negative reinforcement?
Behaviour is encouraged by taking away an undesired stimulus
What is punishment?
A negative consequence which occurs after an undesired behaviour is shown
What is extinction?
The gradual weakening of a conditioned response over time to result in an undesired behaviour eventually stopping
