What is a cleavage
Social division, collective identity, organizational expression
Four key cleavages
- Center periphery cleavage (creation of the states)
- Church state cleave
- Urban rural cleavage (industrialization produced a massive shift of production from the rural to the urban area)
- Owner worker cleavage (produced a large group of people working in the urban sector)
Reasons why cleavage politics have declined
Modern economy, emergence of media and emergence on new political issues
Consequences of dealignment
Increased electoral volatility, increase in the fragmentation of party systems, split ticket voting, increased importance of electoral campaigns, increase in general political interest
