We need to see the ground in order to understand the world around us.

What are McLuhan’s four laws of media?
- What does medium change or intensify, make possible or accelerate?
- What is pushed aside or made obsolete?
- What is retrieved by new medium?
- What is reversed when pushed to the limit?
What is modernity?
Things that are new. Large changes in knowledge, power relations, communication, bureaucracy. Striving for progress. Begins with our own awareness.
What is postmodernism?
Less depth. rejects the modern.
Postmodernism vs. Postmodernity
postmodernism- can be viewed as a style or genre, focuses on questions of style and artistic representation.
postmodernity- designates a specific historical divide in the 19th century
What is postmodernism according to lemert?
There was no unrivalled imperial center after the Euro-American system collapsed. World experiences opposition to universal culture.
What is postmodernism according to Lagopoulos?
An upset in the organization of social life. There is time-space compression. Extension of market over cultural production.
What is postmodern?
controls the flow of ideas. Promotes skepticism, you can question anything, free from old systems and rules.
What is structuralism?
Emerged in the 1950’s. Diminishes the role of human agency, heavily influenced by linguistics.
What is post-structuralism?
the relationship between human beings, the world, and practice of making and reproducing meanings. Not against structuralism, just a refinement.
