Week 3 Flashcards
Science
Causaulity to understand reality through observation, verifiability, and experience
Philosophy
Concern with the purpouse of human life, the nature of being and reality, and the theory and limits to knowledge
Nursing philosophy
Is a “statement of foundational and universal assumptions, beliefs and principles about the nature of knowledge and thought (epistemology) and about the nature of entities represented in the metaparadigm. It refers to the worldview of the profession.
-Multi paradigm discipline there are 4
Nursing science is
System of relationships of human response in health and Illness (includes biologic, behavioural, social, and cultural domains)
-the goal of nursing science is to develop and apply the discipline-spesific knowledge and recognize the relationships of human responses in health and illness and addresses biologic, behavioural, social and cultural domains
Worldview and ways of knowing
-Your worldview and way of knowing are used to create knowledge
-It is your methodology to understand what you need to
-It is critical in helping you shape your framework of nursing from your perspective
Theories of a discipline (VIP)
-Clarify basic assumptions and values
-Define the nature and purpose of practice
Impoartant e of theory in nursing
-The initial work of nursing theorists aimed at clarifying the complex intellectual and intersectional domains in expert nursing practice from the act of accomplishing the task.
-The use of theory fosters an ability to communicate professional convictions, guides ethical action, and fosters critical thinking
-The use of theory offers structure and organization to nursing knowledge and results in systematic approach
-Promotes rational and systematic practice by challenging and also validating intuition
What are theories made of
-Are composed of concepts, propositions, and laws; they can be communicated
-Cary according to the number of elements, characteristics and complexity of the elements, and type of relationship amount the elements
-Are invented rather than discovered
Concept
Terms that refer to phenomena (something) that occurs in nature or thought
An abstract term derived from particular characteristics about a phenomenon symbolic statement describing a phenomena
Concept vs construct
Building block of knowledge vs developed for a specific purpouse
Abstract idea or general notion vs theoretical idea or model
Types of concepts
-Concrete or abstract
What are theories made of: propositions
-The statement about about any connection between 2 or more concepts (which are tested to prove said relationship, uses a hypothesis or testable statement)
-Deals with concepts and is not testers directly but empirical formulation of propositions, statuses as relationships between variables, is called hypotheses
-Can be wrong because of the reliance of belief (bias of researcher) vs tested data
Ie “an increase in student intelligence causes an increase in academic achievement”
What are theories made of: laws
-Summarizes several observations and experiments related to the propositions of a concept
-Differs from a theory but it only DESCRIBES a natural phenomena, it does not attempt to explain it
-
