How do we define culture?
- Values, ethics and material objects produced by its people
- An Accumulation of shared meanings and traditions
- Members share a system of beliefs and practises including values
- The lens through which people view products
What is enculturation?
The process of learning the values of ones culture
What are beliefs?
Thoughts an individual holds
about some object, idea or person
What are Values?
The deep-rooted and enduring beliefs or ideals about what is good and desirable and what is not
What is knowledge?
The familiarity with people or
things, which can include understandings,
facts, information, and descriptions gained
through experience and education.
What are customs?
The norms of behaviour that have been passed from generation to generation
What are the three functional areas of a cultural system?
- Ecology
- Social structure
- Ideology
What is Ecology?
The way the system is adapted to its habitat by the technology used to obtain and distribute resources
What is Social structure?
The way orderly social life is maintained including domestic and political groups
What is Ideology?
The mental characteristics of the people and the way they relate to their environment and social groups
What are Enacted norms?
Norms that are explicitly decided upon
What are Crescive norms?
(Unwritten rules) Are embedded in a culture and are only discovered through interaction with other members of that culture
What are three Crescive norms?
- Customs
- Mores
- Conventions
What are customs?
Norms handed down from the past that control behaviours
What are Mores?
Customs with strong moral overtones
