what are cardinal vowels
allow us to map all of the possible vowel formations that exist- it is a reference system that we can use to compare vowels in English with any other language
oral vowels
soft palette is raised, air cannot escape through nasal passage.
what are the tongue specifications for vowels
Beat- sound made when tongue is close to the front of the mouth
high/close= same thing
Boot- mouth curves down from hard to soft palate
Intermediate vowels- neither front or back
discuss the layout of the cardinal vowel chart

Vowels on left- always made with unrounded lips
Vowels on right- always rounded
Back vowels left- unrounded
Back vowels right- rounded
Front close to front open- 1-4 (primary, unrounded)
what is a vowel quality
front, back, open, closed, rounded, unrounded
what is a free vowel
can appear at the end of a word without a closing consonant
what is a checked vowel
not found at ends of words without closing consonants
what is a dipthong
one vowel quality to another
