What are the 2 different skeletal divisions?
Axial and Appendicular
Define ossicfication
Formation of bone from cartilage
Define osteoblasts
Cells responsible for production of new bone

Cells responsible for breaking down bone

What is the epiphysis?
The end of the bone
What is the diaphysis?
The shaft of the bone
What is the periosteum?
The skin of the bone
What are the functions of the skeleton?
Support, protection, attachment, cell formation, mineral reserves and levers for movement
What are the types of bones?
Long, short, flat, irregular and sesamoid
What are the characteristics of cartilage?
Resilient and smooth elastic tissue
Structual component
Not as rigid as bone
Much less flexible than muscle
What are the three types of cartilage?
Hyaline, fibro and elastic
Where is hyaline cartilage found?
Covers ends of bones and lines the surface of joints and costal cartilage
Where is fibro cartilage found?
Intervertebral discs, symphysis pubis, menisci and joint capsules
