Week 2 - The palate and mandible Flashcards
What are the 3 parts of the oral/facial structure
- Skull
- The palate
- The mandible
The mandible stays in place because of the tempromandibular ligaments, what are they called?
- Temporomandibular ligament
- Sphenomandibular ligament
- Stylomandibular ligament
What does the masseter do?
It pulls manidble UPWARDS and BACKWARDS
What does the contraction of the temporalis do?
contraction pulls upwards and BACKWARDS on the mandible
What is the job of the internal (medial) pterygoid?
Its a major elevator of the jaw, it forms a sling with the masseter.
What does the contraction of the internal (medial) pterygoid do?
contraction pulls UPWARDS on the mandible
What does the contraction of the external (lateral) pterygoid do?
contraction of these muscles pulls the mandible DOWNWARDS and FOREWARD
Where does the anterior digastric belly attach?
it attaches inside the lower border of the mandible to a tendon
What does contraction of the digastric (anterior belly) do?
contraction pulls DOWNWARDS on the mandible
What is the function of the mylohyoid?
It is essential in performing the functions of swallowing and speaking
What does contraction of the mylohyoid do?
Contraction pulls DOWNWARDS on the mandible
What does contraction of the geniohyoid do?
Contraction pulls DOWN on the mandible
What are the two parts of the hard palate?
- Palatine process of maxilla
- Horizontal plates of palatine bone
The palatine process of maxilla takes up how many quarters of the mouth?
- 3/4
What are the two sections of the palate
- Anterior Hard palate
- Posterior soft palate
