Week 2 - Sensory & Perceptual Development Flashcards
Sensory and motor systems are not independent of each other. The infants who have poor integration or parental support show differences in motor development. True or false?
True
As an infant you test out the perceptual information you begin to interpret your surroundings. True or false?
True
What is the purpose of perception?
Perception enables us to adapt to and interact with our environment
Define Affordances Gibson, 1979?
Affordances: are opportunities to act. eg the chair affords you to sit on it. So its your ability to interact with the object. Affordances change with development of infants due to growth etc .
Gibson disagrees with Schmidt, Gibson suggests parts of the body don’t work in isolation but they interact with each other and their environment. True of false?
True
Wht happens to an individual who is isolated from the world around them?
A 14 year old couldn’t walk or speak, as she was not exposed to the world, she had similar ability to an infant as a result of having a lack of interaction and been in isolation. Impaired ability to overcome obstacles. (She had a lack of human interaction).
What is the visual cliff?
Children are placed on a surface like the one seen here, with glass over a reasonably large drop off and they were beckoned by their mothers to come across. The experiment is characterized by some sources as a method of showing that depth perception is partly an innate quality, as children are hesitant to cross the cliff and show signs of fear such as increased heart rate.
Are the following statements true or false?
- Information from the environment is important
- Development does not have a linear progression
- Development It’s is not genetically wired because we have developmental progression and regression.
True
Motor development and perceptual development are both intertwined.
“You have to learn to move and move to learn”
True or false?
True
What is the McGurk effect?
Shows that the syllable we perceive depends on the strength of the auditory and visual information, and whether some compromise can be achieved. Our speech function makes use of all types of relevant information, regardless of the modality. In fact, there is some evidence that the brain treats visual speech information as if it is auditory speech. E.g vase and base sound the same when not reliant on visual informatin
How long does it take for the visual and auditory system to develop?
Visual system takes until you the age of 5 to get 20:20 vision as it takes a long time for it to mature. However the Auditory system is working in the mothers whom.
Visual information is very important to maintain balance.
Mechanical stimuli is no good alone but integrating this with visual information shows much better results.
What is spatial awareness?
An understanding of the external spaces surrounding the individual and the individual’s ability to produce muscular movement in and through that space.
What is temporal awareness?
- An understanding of time relationships
- Ability to predict the time at which a ball will arrive
- For example, speed, trajectory, weight of ball, and distance are used to determine flight time
What is directional awareness?
- Ability to know and understand the names and functions of various body parts (6yrs-9yrs)
- Ability to understand the body’s potential in movement performance
- Ability to produce various movements
At 3 weeks a newborn can distinguish between the mother’s and father’s voices and the voice of a stranger by three weeks old.
