What are the hand instruments?
calculus removal forceps, hand scaler, curette, morse scaler, periodontal probe/explorer, and dental mirror
Most instruments have what 4 parts?
handle, shank, terminal shank, and working end
calculus removal forceps do what?
allow for quick removal of large pieces of calculus
hand scalers are used for?
scaling calculus from the crown surface, removes tartar and plaque missed by ultrasonic scaler
A dental hoe does what?
aids in the removal of large deposits of calculus on the supragingival surface of the tooth
Morse scaler is for?
removal of suprgingival plaque or tartar in hard to reach places
curette is for?
removes plaque and tartar above and below the gum line
what are the 2 types of curettes?
universal and a gracey
periodontal probe is for?
used to measure the depth of the gingival sulcus
periodontal probe is for?
used to detect defects in the tooth surface
dental mirror is for?
to allow better view of the teeth in the back of the mouth
Dental elevator is for?
to break the periodontal ligaments before extraction of the tooth
extraction forceps are for?
used to grip the tooth to lift it out for extraction after the periodontal ligaments have been broken
power scalers do what?
help with removal of plaque and tartar
what does a polisher do?
removes small defects and irregularities that occur during the cleaning process, smooths the surface of the tooth and decreases plaque retention
polish is made out of?
pumis ( volcanic ash)
a drill is used for?
used for cutting teeth, making root canal entries, and other procedures
what is the order on hand instruments for care?
use- wash- sharpen- sterilize
