- IBD: IBD patients show reduction of diversity of micro biome. Loss of normal anaerobic bacteria such as Bacteroides, Eubacterium, Lactobacillus

effect of probiotics on various diseases
A
- Pouchitis: effective for treatment
- Crohns disease: probiotics have no proven role
- ulcerative colitis: probiotics similar to ASA effect
- antibiotic assoc. diarrhea: not all probiotics are effective, mainly lactobacillus and saccharomyces
- C difficile diarrhea: effective in severe recurrent disease
- acute diarrhea: shortens duration of illness about 1 day
- atopic dermatitis: mild efficacy
- NEC: decrease incidence of severe NEC
- URI: lower # developing URI and decrease antibiotic use
