Week 2 - Gross Neuroanatomy Flashcards
What is the main function of the Central Nervous System?
The processing of information
What is the main function of the peripheral nervous system?
The transmission of information
What are the first 6 branches of the Peripheral Nervous System?
Somatic, Autonomic, Afferent, Efferent, Sympathetic, Parasympathetic
What is the difference between the Somatic Nervous System and the Autonomic Nervous System?
Somatic = voluntary Autonomic = involuntary
What is the difference between Afferent Nerves and Efferent Nerves?
Afferent nerves = Sensory control (incoming)
Efferent nerves = Motor control (outgoing)
What is the difference between Sympathetic and Parasympathetic?
Sympathetic = fight or flight response (brain to lower back) Parasympathetic = rest and digest response (chest to mid-lower back)
What allows us to identify cranial nerves and how many pairs of them exist in the human body?
Cranial nerves connect directly to the brain, and there are 12 pairs of them in the human body
What allows us to identify spinal nerves and how many pairs of them exist in the human body?
Spinal nerves connect to the spinal cord, and there are 31 pairs of them in the human body
What is grey matter made of?
Dendrites and Synapses (nuclei and ganglia)
What is white matter made of?
Axons (tracts and nerves)
What are the main functional cells of the nervous system called?
Neurons
What are the three main roles of neurons?
Collect, integrate and transmit information
