What is a functional disorder?
Troublesome physical symptoms which after investigation are not fully explained by a physical disease or injury. The symptoms are real and not imagined. Consequently, it is likely that brain activity involved in making the symptoms is caused by an emotional change.
What is a somatisation disorder?
Patient presents with SYMPTOMS (atleast 2 years) and requests for persistent medical tests in spite of negative test findings and symptoms have no physiological basis.
Usually rejects tries to talk about psychological causes.
What is hypochondriac disorder?
Persistent belief that they have an underlying sinister DISEASE e.g. cancer. Believes despite negative tests.
What is conversion disorder?
Typically loss of motor or sensory function. The patient doesn’t feign the symptoms (factitious disorder) or do it for some sort of gain (malingering)
Patients may be indifferent to their disorder.
What is dissociative disorder?
Dissociation is the process of ‘separating off’ certain memories from normal consciousness.
In contrast to conversion disorder, it includes psychiatric symptoms e.g. amnesia, stupor.
Dissociative identity disorder is the new term for multiple personality disorder- most severe case.
What is maunchasens syndrome?
Intentional production of physical or psychiatric symptoms.
Also known as factitious disorder.
What is malingering?
Fraudulent simulation or exaggeration of symptoms for financial gain.
What is flight of ideas?
Words are associated together inappropriately because of their meaning or rhyme so that speech loses its aim and the patient wonders from the original theme.
What is Knights move thinking?
Similar to flight of ideas but there is no link between words.
What is tangential thinking?
Wandering from one topic to another without returning to the original point.
What is circumstantiality?
An inability to answer a question without giving unnecessary, excessive detail. The person however does return to the original point.
What is delirium tremens?
Alcohol withdrawal - 48-72 hours.
