Week 2- Functional Areas of the Cortex Flashcards
from top to bottom what are the 3 parts of the brainstem?
midbrain
pons
medulla
what is posterior to the brainstem?
cerebellum
what is superior to the brain stem?
diencephalon (thalamus, hypothalamus)
what is the function of the midbrain?
control involuntary eye movement and reflexes related to visual and audio information
what are the 3 functions of the pons?
relays messages from cortex to cerebellum
responsible for facial sensitivity
REM sleep
what are the 3 functions of the medulla?
- regulates breathing, HR, blood pressure, digestion and sleeping
- major role in regulating muscles tone/movement (decussation)
- role in reflexes such as vomiting, sneezing etc
what 5 things is the cerebellum responsible for?
- coordination of voluntary movements
- coordinates different muscle groups to produce smooth muscle activity
- posture, balance, speech
- motor learning
- sense of body
what is the diencephalon?
small part of brain that connects midbrain with telencephalon
what 5 things are found at the diencephalon?
- epithalamus
- thalamus
- subthalamus
- metathalamus
- hypothalamus
Describe the thalamus (3 points)?
- relay station between different cortical/subcortical areas of the cerebellum
- receives sensory signals and sends them to associated cortical area
- regulates sleep and wakefulness
Describe the hypothalamus (3 points)?
- regulates metabolic processes etc of autonomic nervous system
- synthesises/secretes certain neurohormones to stimulate/inhibit secretion of hormones from pituitary gland
- controls body temperature, appetite, hunger, sleep cycles, thirst, circadian rhythms, blood pressure, heart rate
