Week 2 ELEMENTS AND PRINCIPLES Flashcards
the most fundamental element of a photograph. either straight, curved, or a combination of the two. can be solid, dashed or interrupted, implied, or psychological. They can be vertical, horizontal, or somewhere in-between.
Line
are two-dimensional. They can be measured by overall height and width. can be the outline of an object—familiar or unfamiliar.
Shapes
is three-dimensional. has overall height, width, and depth.
Form
is the purest essence of a shape—no form, texture, or color Due to its stark contrast with its surroundings, it is also the most visually obvious.
Silhouette
in “real life” can be, basically, smooth or rough. We can use other descriptors as well:slimy, wet, hard, soft, bumpy, shiny, etc.
is similar to form in that it is revealed by variations in tonality and presented in two dimensions.
Texture
a phenomenon of light (such as red, brown, pink, or gray) or visual perception that enables one to differentiate otherwise identical objects.
Light itself has no perceived color. But, send light through a prism or a drop of water and we can see that it is comprised of a literal rainbow of colors.
Color
is the intensity or purity of a color. The purest color is a hue with no white, black, or gray added to it.
Saturation
is simply the description of the color (e.g., blue, red, yellow, etc.).
Hue
physical magnitude, extent, or bulk : relative or proportionate dimensions, ____ in a photograph physical magnitude, extent, or bulk : relative or proportionate dimensions
Size
is the relative brightness or darkness of a color.
Value
makes sense of the visual world through regularity. Elements of design can be put together in a predictable manner to form a pattern, also creates a visual harmony and familiarity.
Pattern
makes the composition look aesthetic. It is used to show the visual weight of the image and can unite or create division. emphasizes the stability of the image includesSymmetrical ______andAsymmetrical ______.
Balance
the space behind the subject with no emphasis. distracts the viewer’s eye, with no focus on one element or in one direction.
Negative space
a co-linear or line of direction of the image.
Grouping
contributes a lot to any photograph and it’s more than creating a visually pleasing element. It sets the mood and frames the subject.
Colour
the principle that states that the mind will fill in missing information to create a complete and coherent image. the tendency to fill the missing gaps in an informative way to finish a story by thePhotographer.
