What is Hoovers’ sign?
Diaphragm already flattened so slides across and pulls ribs in
What are three things you might observe about skin colour?
Pale
Ruddy
Cyanosis
How would you palpate the abdomen?
In a reclined, not slumped, posture
Apply a flat hand and palpate gently below rib cage
What are you looking for when palpating the abdomen?
Does it feel soft and mobile?
Would diaphragm be able to descend properly?
What are the muscles of inspiration in normal and forced breathing?
Normal - diaphragm, External IC
Forced - scalene, SCM, pecs, serratus anterior, lats
What are accessory muscles of expiration?
Rectus Abdominus Ext/Int Oblique Transversus Abdominus Lowest fibres of Iliocostalis Longissimus Serratus Posterior Inferior QL
What is nasal flaring and what does it mean?
Dilation of nostrils
Attempt to decrease airway resistance
What are you looking for during palpation?
Abdomen Chest expansion Trachea Sputum - tactile fremitus Pain Body temp Skin - key hole surgery/ scars Surgical emphysema Response to touch
What is tactile fremitus?
Transmission of crackles felt on outside of chest wall
What is surgical emphysema?
Air in the subcutaneous tissue of the chest, neck or face
Crackles on touch
