week 2 Flashcards
what is a thermodynamic process
a change that a system undergoes from one state to another
what is a ‘path of process’
series of states through which a system passes during a process
what are the 4 different types of processes
isothermal
isobaric
isochoric
adiabatic
what is a isothermal (system)
this is when system temperature remains constant throughout the process
what is a isobaric (system)
system pressure remains constant throughout the process
what is a isochoric (system)
system volume remains constant
what is a adiabatic (system)
no heat exchange between system and its surroundings by heating or cooling (well insulated)
what is a thermodynamic system cycle
when a system undergoes a cycle, if it returns to its initial state at the end then it has been a cycle
can a system cycle have 2 or more processes
yes, a 2 cycle and 4 cycle process
are heat and work 2 different forms of energy?
yes
what is heat energy
form of energy which goes from one body to another. (from hot to cold only)
what is work
this is the force and distance, when a prodcut moves
what are the 2 requirements of ‘work’
there must be a force
the boundary msut move
what is a reversible process
when a process can be reversed without leavinf any trace on the surroundings
what is the zeroth law of thermodynamics
if 2 bodies are in thermal equilibrium (balanced) with a thrid body, they are also in thermal equilibrium with each other
