What is Personality?
Regularities in behaviour and experience
A person typical mode of response
Our identity and our reputation
What are the 3 levels of personality?
Level 1: Dispositional Traits
Level 2: Characteristic adaptations
Level 3: Life Narratives
In personality, what is the “Life Narrative”?
The story we have constructed about who we are. It is highly and completely individualised
In personality, what is “Characteristic Adaptations”?
Concerns an individuals particular life circumstances. Highly contextualised including specific goals, social roles, educational aspirations
In personality, what is “Dispositional Traits”?
Broad patterns of behaviour and experience that is relatively decontextualised for example, being shy, bold, warm, aloof, disciplined, impulsive etc
What are personality traits?
Probabilistic descriptions of regularities in behaviour and experience
What is reliability?
Observed score = True Score + Measurement Error
What is validity?
Measurements measuring what they are intending to
What are some estimates of reliability?
Test-Retest reliability - correlation between T1 score and T2 score
Rationale - a reliable measure is a repeatable measure
What are some caveats to reliability?
When we are measuring CHANGE
What is the Cronbach’s Alpha?
Average of all possible split halves and it tests internal consistency.
