What is transference?
Transference is the repetition of past feelings, emotions or conflicts belonging in earlier relationships and situations, displaced on to the therapist. Involves some form of distortion.
What is countertransference?
Countertransference is the transference of the clients own material to the client, both in the clients transference and the non-transferent material presented.
List some elements of transference…
Often outside the clients awareness, positive transference can catch you unawares, high intense reactions always a high possibility of transference (differential - empathetic failure), common mistake is replaying old problems (e.g. telling a passive person what to do, expressing disappointment at homework tasks not completed)
