Week 2 Flashcards
Periapical X-ray. Provide a view of the apex of the tooth.
PA
Abbreviation for full mouth X-rays. Normally 18 X-rays consisting of 4 bite wings, and 14 periapicals. May have 20 X-rays
Fmx
Abbreviation for bitewing. Provides a view interproximally (between the teeth)
BWX
A bony elevation or protuberance of normal bone. Usually seen on the upper palate behind the front teeth or under the tongue inside the lower jaw.
Torus
Gives a complete view of both jaws on film. Used as a reference in the extraction of wisdom teeth. Also value able in the diagnosis of abnormal growths. They provide a view of the entire dentition and surrounding structures.
Panoramic
Visible image on X-ray after exposure before development/ processing.
Latent image
Medium grey to black on X-ray film.
Radiolucent
White to grey on X-ray film
Raidopaque
Three steps to develop X-ray
- Developer
- Fixer
- Water ( wash or rinse)
Three different types of X-ray intra oral
Bitewing
Periapicals
Occlusal
The differences between the shades of grey
Contrast
Used to aim the X-ray beam at the film in the patients mouth. The part on the X-ray machine with camera.
PID position indicator device
Gloves googles mask washing hands
PPE personal protective equipment
Vertical angulation was too flat (low) image on film is longer than actual tooth.
Elongation
Environmental protection agency EPA registered high level disinfectant.
Glutaraldehyde
Sterilizing instruments by means of moist heat under pressure
Autoclaving
The apex and surrounding area of a tooth.
Periapical
Surface disinfectant commonly known as household bleach
Sodium hypochlorite
Used for instruments that cannot be cleaned immediately after the procedure. It prevents the drying of blood and debris on the instrument
Holding solution
A federal agency charged with establishing guidelines and regulations regarding worker safety. These guidelines include storage and disposal of toxic chemicals and hazardous materials and the safety and proper use of chemical and office equipment.
OSHA occupational safety and health administration.
Acronym for As low as reasonably achievable. Pertains to radiation exposure encountered when taking X-rays. This idea requires that every possible precaution is taken to limit radiation levels when exposing the patient or technician to radiation.
ALARA
Instrument that loosens and removes debris by sound waves traveling through a liquid.
Ultrasonic cleaner
Blood, saliva, and other body fluids.
Bioburden
Slime producing bacterial communities that may also harbor fungi, algae and Protozoa.
Biofilm
The process of destroying pathogenic organism or rendering them inert.
Disinfection
Process that kills all microoranganisms.
Sterilization
Vertical angulation too steep. Results in the image on the film is shorter than actual tooth.
Foreshortening
Incomplete image potion of the film not exposed to X-ray. Will have to redo.
Cone cutting
Registers and regulates disinfectants and chemical sterilants and places them in categories described as high level intermediate level and low level .
EPA environmental protection agency
Look like household dishwasher. Uses very hot water recirculating and detergents to remove organic material from instruments.
Automatic washer
Four methods of sterilization
Steam autoclave
Unsaturated chemical heat
Dry heat oven type ( static air)
Rapid heat transfer (forced air)
Film used to examine large areas of the upper and lower jaw. Size 4 film.
Occlusal film
