Week 2 Flashcards

1
Q

What are the normal structure of the heart and its function?

A

• 4 chambers that make up the heart
• 2 on the left side and 2 on the right
• The 2 small upper chambers are the atria
• The 2 larger lower chambers are the ventricles

These left and right sides of the heart are separated by a wall of muscle called the
septum

Blood movement through the chambers and its retention is controlled by valves
Blood travels from right side to left side via the lungs only
The chambers themselves work together. The 2 atria contract simultaneously, and
the 2 ventricles contract simultaneously.
• Systolic blood pressure - The pressure created in the arteries by the contraction of
the left ventricle
Once the left ventricle has fully contracted it begins to relax and refill with
blood from the left atria
• The pressure in the arteries falls whilst the ventricle refills.
• This is the diastolic blood pressure

Heart pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs, receives oxygenated blood and pump
that back into circulation
