Q

lakoff contributions to the study of language and gender?

A
  • gender is encoded even in languages that don’t make it apparent grammatically
  • hedging and hyperpoliteness: uncertainty and lack of authority (ie. “sort of,” “if it’s not too much to ask”
  • tag questions: “i’m gonna do this, ‘okay?’”
  • question intonation (uptalk)

Q

gaudio study “sounding gay”

A
  • showed us that gender and sexuality is heavily based on perceptions
  • gay men have their own reasons to speak a certain way, don’t want to “mock women” as it is not conscious
  • this perception also avoids seeing diverse gender expression
  • limitations: lesbian(gay) women? heavy western ideologies?
