What is recruitment?
The process of attracting the interest of a pool of capable people who will apply for jobs within an organisation.
What is selection?
The process by which managers use specific instruments to choose from a pool of applicants the ideal candidate.
What are some parts of the external context that would need to be analysed when it comes to recruitment?
1- Anticipated market activity
2- Technological change
3- Labour supply and demand
What are some parts of the internal context that would need to be analysed when it comes to recruitment?
1- Training and development
2- Performance management
3- HR policy and practices
What is person-organisation fit?
This view assumes that a fit between a person and the environment can be found so that their commitment and performance will be enhanced.
Two principles guide the selection process and choice of techniques. What are they?
1- To assess individual differences and distinguish individuals regarding their intelligence, experience, social skills, etc.
2- To predict the way people will perform in the workplace.
What should you consider when it comes to the reactions of applicants to selection methods?
1- If selection is too invasive, this will lead to reduced attraction to the organisation
2- Candidates who have a negative experience can dissuade others
3- A negative selection experience can impact on job acceptance
What are the types of psychometric testing and briefly explain these?
1- Ability tests- Focuses on Mental Abilities Such as Verbal Reasoning and Numerical Power.
2- Inventories- These are usually self-report questionnaires about personality, indicating traits, values, interests
Why do firms use agencies to attract applicants?
1- To reduce the time and in-house resources dedicated to recruitment
2- To gain flexibility to meet market demands
What are the three types of agency activity and briefly explain these
1- Contingency- Ad hoc (when needed) recruitment of temporary staff
2- Advertised selection- agency run campaigns on firm’s behalf
3- Search- executive search, ‘Head hunting’
