A

What is the medical model definition of disability

A

It focuses on the individual, and the disability is their problem

What is the social model definition of disability?

A

Society is the problem. Disability comes from barriers: social barriers (i.e. stigma), environmental barriers (i.e. accessibility in buildings). We can minimize disability by making things more accessible

What is rehabilitation as defined by WHO?

A

A set of interventions designed to optimize functioning and reduce disability in individuals with health conditions in interaction with their environment. I.e. teaching someone with vision loss how to use a white cane.

A

1) structure - spine
2) function - complete or incomplete
3) activity limitation - walking, sitting, toiletting, etc problems
4) participation restrictions - going to work, driving
5) environmental factors - barriers in the way for our patients, and facilitators (things that can help patients increase function)
6) personal factors - age, gender, etc (our class doesn’t focus on this though)
