What is the WHO’s definition of health?
Health is the state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease
What is the University of Toronto’s definition of quality of life (QoL)?
The degree to which a person enjoys the important possibilities of his or her life - it is subjective
Give some examples of the domains in University of Toronto’s definition of quality of life?
Each of the important possibilities are considered domains: i.e. recreation, environment (physical, social), economic / financial, health, work
What is the medical model definition of disability
It focuses on the individual, and the disability is their problem
What is the social model definition of disability?
Society is the problem. Disability comes from barriers: social barriers (i.e. stigma), environmental barriers (i.e. accessibility in buildings). We can minimize disability by making things more accessible
What is rehabilitation as defined by WHO?
A set of interventions designed to optimize functioning and reduce disability in individuals with health conditions in interaction with their environment. I.e. teaching someone with vision loss how to use a white cane.
What are the 6 factors of ICF (International Classification of Functioning Disability and Health)?
1) structure
2) function
3) activity limitation
4) participation restriction
5) environmental factors
6) personal factors
Explain the ICF factors for a spinal cord injury.
1) structure - spine
2) function - complete or incomplete
3) activity limitation - walking, sitting, toiletting, etc problems
4) participation restrictions - going to work, driving
5) environmental factors - barriers in the way for our patients, and facilitators (things that can help patients increase function)
6) personal factors - age, gender, etc (our class doesn’t focus on this though)

Everything people do during the course of every day life - it brings meaning and purpose to your life
