Define Self-Concept
a collection of beliefs, values, and attitudes which a person holds about who he or she is in relation to self-perceptions and others
Define Reflected Appraisal
we develop a self-concept that matches the way we believe others see us
Define/Explain Social Comparison
evaluating ourselves with how we compare with others (superior or inferior)
Define Self-Esteem
the value we place on ourselves; an evaluation of one’s self-worth and confidence
What are the factors that build self-esteem?
believing you are lovable; believing you are capable; believing you are unique, but with a sense of belonging
Define Self-Ideal
each person has a certain standard by which he judges his behaviour; congruence between one’s self and one’s self-ideal is an important determinant of mental health
Define Self-Awareness
a dynamic, transformative process of self
The use of self-insights and presence knowingly to guide behaviour that is genuine and authentic to create a healing interpersonal environment
Define Antecedent
a thing or event that existed before or logically precedes another
What are the antecedents for self-awareness?
Cognitive dissonance (or dialectical tension) in thought/emotions o Hard to see a need to change until raised to level of conscious awareness o Cues or Stimulus; ex. direct/indirect feedback from others, viewing self in mirror, video, etc. …, personal journal writing
Define Introspection
Cognitive exploration of own thoughts, feelings, beliefs, values, behaviours, and feedback from others
What are the consequences/benefits of being self-aware?
- “Journey without a final destination”
- Discovery of different paths (relationships, life)
- Increased insight into values, attitudes, prejudices, beliefs, assumptions, feelings, motives, needs and countertransferences
- Higher level of authenticity
- Increased sense of one’s own control (choosing how to respond)
- Deep therapeutic relationships
What are the 3 layers of self-awareness?
o Superficial – aware of obvious aspects of self
o Selective – awareness of things one believes one needs to be aware of
o Deep – involves issues known only to oneself – one’s secrets
What are the 3 interrelated activities in nursing regarding self-awareness?
o Cognitive
o Affective
o Behavioural

the ability to function with healthy responses, even when experiencing significant stress and adversity
