Week 13 Psych Flashcards
What is the function of the hippocampus?
Formation of new memories
What sections of the brain make up the lambic system?
hippocampus
amygdala
hypothalamus
thalamus
What is the function of the cerebellum?
Coordination of voluntary movement- walking, typing, rhythm
What are reflexes?
specific patterns of motor response that are triggered by specific patterns of sensory stimulation
What are motor neurons?
Neurons that carry outgoing information from the brain and spinal cord to the muscles and glands
What are sensory neurons?
They carry impulses from the sense organs to the spinal cord and brain
What is the somatic nervous system?
The division of the peripheral nervous system that controls the body’s skeletal muscles
What is the sympathetic nervous system?
Arousal, Angry, sexual aroused, tells the heart to beat faster, anxious
What is the autonomic nervous system?
The part of the peripheral nervous system that controls the glands and the muscles of the internal organs (such as the heart).
What is the central nervous system?
Brain and spinal cord
“superhighway to the brain”
What is the peripheral nervous system?
Nerves that connect the central nervous system to the rest of your body
How does the brain learn?
Through neural networks
What is neuroplasticity?
the brains capacity to reorganize itself. Greater in younger people than older
What are reuptake inhibitors?
Drugs that interfere with the reuptake of neurotransmitters in the synapse so that a greater amount remains in the synapse
What is an agonist?
A drug that mimics the effects of a neurotransmitter.
