Diabetes - complications
nepthropathy neuropathy retinopathy cardiovascular disease diabetes induced ketoacidosis
Diabetes type 1 exercise benefits
aerobic: lowers mortality improves endothelial function improves lipid profile increases insulin sensitivity resistance: reduces risk of hypoglyceamia episode if before aerobic ex \+ normal benefits
Diabetes type 2 exercise benefits
aerobic: reduces mortality insulin resistance triglycerides BP A1C levels (blood glucose level) resistance: improves glycaemic control BP strength insulin sensitivity reduces fat mass \+ normal benefits
Diabetes - special considerations
BG before ex at 6-13 mmol/L
low BG occurs several hours after ex
test BG before, during and after ex
after ex during day, BG should be 10-12 mmol/L before bed
Have meal of low GI carbohydrates 1-2 hours before ex
quick release glucose food/drink to be had every 30 min during ex
eat extra carbohydrates after ex
Kidney disease - exercise special considerations
perform on non-dilaysis days
if have to, do first 1/2 of dialysis, focus on LL
use RPE not heart rate
dont use limb with fistula (needs to stay in)
dont do ex post dialysis
may need to start I/T then progress to continuous
Critical illness (ICU) - exercise recommendations
start within 3 days of admission
nutrition may need to be increased for ex
screening for mental capacity
regular muscle weakness screening
