week 12 Flashcards
what class of drug is salbutamol?
Selective B2 adrenergic receptor agonist
Short acting B2 agonist (SABA)
mechanism of action of salbutamol?
stimulation of B2 receptor on bronchi smooth muscle.
activates adenylate cyclase.
increase cAMP causing smooth muscle relaxation.
Also activation of Na/K/ATPase - shift in K
how is tachycardia caused by salbutamol?
Saturation of B2 receptors at high doses causes B1 effects eg tachycardia.
What class of drug is ipratropium bromide?
anticholinergic bronchodilator.
muscuranic receptor anatagonist (MRA).
Quarternary structure.
mechanism of action ipratropium bromide?
Blocks muscuranic M3 receptors on bronchi smooth muscle.
Inhibits acetylcholine mediated bronchoconstriction.
reduces mucus absorption.
why does ipratropium not cross the blood brain barrier.
Quarternary ammonium compound
when should you use ipratropium with caution?
Narrow angle glaucoma.
Prostatic hypertrophy.
Urinary retention.
Pregnancy.
