Week 12 Flashcards
What are the three measures of central tendency?
Mean, median, mode
(A simple measure of the average value)
What is the mean?
Sum of all values divided by the total number of values
What is the equation for mean?
X bar = sum of all values (x) / number of total values (N)
If we have data on a whole population, then the symbol for the mean is?
u (pronounced mu)
If we have data on a sample (from a larger population) then the symbol used for mean is?
x bar
What is the medium?
The point at which half of the values for a given variable in a sample lie below and half of the values lie above
(Half ordered values are less than or equal to the median, while half ordered values are greater than or equal to the median)q
How does the median change dependent of if n is odd or even?
If odd = median is middle ordered number
If even = median is the average of the two middle ordered numbers
The median is often represented with what? What is it plotted using?
Quartiles.
1st quartile is 1/4 of data below it,
3rd quartile has 3/4 of the data below it,
Interquartile range contains the middle 1/2 of the sample data
Plotted using whisker and box plot, where the ends of the whiskers represent the maximum and minimum values (excluding any extreme results)
What is the mode?
The name for the most frequently occurring event/observation in a set of data
Usually useful if nominal data is present
What three types of modal data are there?
Modal, biomodal, multimodal
