week 11- iv meds and blood transfusions Flashcards
methods to admin meds inravenously
- large-volume infusion of fluid
- piggy back
- volume-controlled infusion
- iv push or bolus
- injection ports
when the administered drug is particularly potent
an anitdote to the drug should be available.
an intermittent infusion is a method of admini.ing a med
mixed in a small amount of IVsolution such as 50 or 100 ml
in an tandem setup or alignment,
a second container is attached to the line of the first container at the lower secondary port.
it permits meds to be admined intermittently or simultaneously with the primary solution.
in the piggyback aligmnet
a second set connects the second container to the tubing of the primary container t the upper port. this setup is used solely for intermittent drug administraion
allow solution from the primary IV bag to backfill the secondary IV tubing and one third to one half of the secondary tubing chamber
.
intermittent meds can also be admin.ed by volume- control infusion sets
they are small fluid containers (100-150 ml) attached below the primary infusion container so that the med is admin.ed through the clients IV line.
the volume control sets are frequently used to infuse solutions into children and older clients when the volume admin.ed is critical and must be carefully monitored.
IV PUSH
Is the IV admin of an undiluted drug directly into the systemic circulation.
it is used when a med cannot be diluted or in an emergency.
