What are the 6 stages of the transtheoretical model?
- pre-contemplation (may have denial)
- contemplation (may have ambivalence)
- preparation (motivated)
- action (doing it)
- maintenance (living it)

definition of ambivalence?
mixed feelings about something or contradictory ideas.
What % of clients experience a relapse?
90% experiencing a lapse in 12 month period
60% experience relapse
What is motivational interviewing?
important for facilitating movement from contemplation stage to preparation (in transtheoretical model), however they are different things!
a directive client centred approach, helping clients to resolve ambivalence.

What are the assumptions of MI?
Motivation is a state not a trait
Resistance is not a force we must overcome
Ambivalence is normal
Person seeking help should be an ally rather than an adversary
Recovery and change are innate, constant and intrinsic to the human experience
What is the “Spirit of MI”? (underlying values)
- Partnership
- Acceptance (includes empathy)
- Compassion - intention in the clients’ best interest.
- Evocation - eliciting client’s wisdom
What are the 4 processes of MI?
- Engaging.
- Focussing
- Evoking
- Planning
