What is “dementia”?
set of symptoms that includes memory loss, difficulties with thinking, problem solving or language.
What is Alzheimer’s disease?
- irreversible, progressive brain disease
- destroys memory and thinking skills
- symptoms first appear after after age 60
What is the idea of progression?
the idea that the way a person experiences AD is dependent on factors such as genes, physical health, emotional resilience, medication and support
What support has been found for AD?
significant tissue loss in the brain, including frontal lobes and temporal lobes
Why is AD a progressive disease?
major early loss of cell bodies in basal forebrain bundle - reducing levels of the neurotransmitter ACETYLCHOLINE and impairing signal transmission between neurons
