Workplace Health and Safety
Workplace Health and Safety (WHS)
the promotion and maintenance of the highest degree of physical, mental, social wellbeing in all occupations
Physical, physiological and psychosocial conditions of and organisation’s workforce, related to aspects of work and the work context
Duty of care
EMPLOYERS must ensure the health and safety of all workers, those under their influence or direction and any other persons who come into contact with the business
EMPLOYEES must:
- take reasonable care of their health and safetyand those affected by their activity
- comply with reasonable instructions\
- cooperate with WHS policies and procedures, such as wearing personal protective equipment (PPE)
The regulator
government agency administering and enforcing WHS law.
The regulator:
- collects the information
- advises government and the public
- uses inspectors to investigate accidents and workplace. They have the right to enter the workplace without prior consent or notice.
Health and Safety Representatives (HSR)
represent the work group
Risk Management
Identify, assess and control risk
- identify the hazards - what could go wrong and how
- analyse and assess the risk - what is the likelihood, consequences, which are priorities
- take action - action that is required
Hazard can include
physical factors chemical ergonomic biological social and psychological mechanical and electrical
Controlling the risk
Hierarchy of control
Elimination of the hazard substitution - safer alternative isolation - barriers engineering controls - guards administrative controls - training, rotating jobs use of PPE
Worker’s compensation
paid for: lost earning associated expenses, such as medical, hospital and rehabilitation costs permanent impairment death
