To increase temperature of tissue
Increased metabolic rate
Increased tissue extensibility
Precautions of thermal therapy
- Acute injury/inflammation
-Pregnancy
-Impaired circulation
-Edema
-Cardiac insufficiency
-Metal implants (ie plates, screws, -arthroplasty)
-Open wounds
Contraindications of thermal therapy
-Hemorrhage
-Thrombophlebitis
-Impaired sensation
-Communication problems
-Malignancy
-Open wound (paraffin and contrast bath)
Benefits of Hydrotherapy
- Reduces load on weight bearing joints
- Allows strengthening with reduced weight bearing
- Can aid in swelling control
Precautions of hydrotherapy
- Limited strength, endurance, balance, or ROM
- Medications
- Urinary incontinence (stress incontinence and urgency)
- Fear of water
- Respiratory problems
- Hypertension
Contraindications of hydrotherapy
- Cardiac instability
- Infectious conditions that may be spread by water
- Bowel and bladder incontinence (use of pads, pull-ups, diapers, or foley catheter)
- Severe epilepsy
- Bleeding, open wound
