Week 10 Flashcards
What stage are focus groups not suited for?
late stages (evaluation)
What is a focus group?
A discussion-based group interview often used for market research
Why is it bad to combine Think Aloud Protocols and Focus Groups/Interviews in conjunction?
Talking and doing the task at the same time can affect results - time taken
What are the advantages of Think Aloud Protocols (3)
- Simplicity
- Can Provide useful insights
- can show how a system is actually used
What are the disdvatages of Think Aloud Protocols? (3)
- Subjective
- Selective
- The act of describing may alter task performance
What is experimental research in ID?
A test of a single variable by changing it while keeping all other variables the same.
In experimental research how do you compare results?
A controlled experiment generally compares te results obtained from an experimental sample against a control sample
What are independent varibales?
Test conditions - what is changing
What are dependednt variables?
What you are measuring e.g. Usability, time,…
What are confounding variables
Things you cannot control but may affect results
What are the two types of Experimental Design?
- Withing Subject design
- Between Subject design
What is withing subject design?
The same group of participants tests all the designs and then you compare results. It is less costly than between-subject design and less likely to suffer from user variation
What is between subject design?
Separate groups of participants test different Designs and then you compare results between groups. There is no transfer of learning. More participants are required than within-subject design and variation can bias results.
What should be included in a testing/evaluation method?(5)
- Procedure
- Materials (Computers, screens, microphones etc.)
- Setup (where participant is seated, how far from the screen etc.)
- Measurements (what is being measured and how)
- Participants (demographics etc.)
