Week 10 Flashcards
Chemical reactions
Any process that leads to chemical transformation and is often performed in solution - solvents
Conservation of mass
Mass must remain constant over time and cannot be created or destroyed but can be rearranged
What is a mole
6.022 x 10^23
Moles = ?
Moles (mol) = mass (g) / molar mass (g mol ^-1)
High energy system
High energy potential
Low energy system
Low energy potential
Force
F = -dE/dx
Force is a measure of how energy changes with distance
Power
P= dE/dt
Attractive force and repulsive force
Attractive force pushes things toward zero - makes things closer
Repulsive pushes things away
Potential well
A region surrounding potential energy. This energy cannot convert to other energy because it is trapped
Electrostatic potential
Atoms not governed by potential energy are governed by electrostatic potential
The interaction of charges is described by Coulombs Law
Covalent vs ionic bonds
Covalent bonds are quite strong have lots of directionality and have a short range
Ionic bonds have lots of strength no directionality and medium range
Properties of bonds
Stable bond length
Have to use energy to compress or pull apart the bond
When a bond is formed energy decreases
Binding energy is needed to put in to break the bond
Width of the well dictates distance over with which things interact
- described the range of the bond
