WEEK 1 - TYPES OF JOINTS Flashcards
Fibrous Joint (Typical features, amount of movement and why)
Typical features: Articulating surfaces connected by collagen fibres.
Amount of movement possible and why: No movement possible,
Bones connected by collagen fibres which do not stretch.
Examples: Syndesmosis, Sutures, Gomphosis,
Primary Cartilaginous (Typical features, amount of movement and why)
Typical Features: Connected by hyaline cartilage.
Amount of movement possible and why: No movement due to firm hyaline cartilage
Examples:
First sternocostal joint
Secondary Cartilaginous (Typical features, amount of movement and why)
Typical Features: Connected by fibrocartilage or hyaline cartilage.
Amount of movement possible: Limited movement due to fibrocartilage.
Examples: Pubic symphysis, Intervertebral disks
Synovial Joints (Typical features, amount of movement and why)
Typical Features: Presence of synovial cavity between articulating bones.
Amount of movement possible and why: Freely mobile as articulating surfaces of the bones at a synovial joint are not bound to each other by connective tissue or cartilage
Types of Synovial Joints
Ball and Socket.
Hinge.
Ellipsoid/Condyloid.
Facet/Plane.
Pivot.
